The very lovely Thea Lewis-Yates contacted me last year regarding an underwater shoot she was styling for Zena Holloway (the amazing Underwater Photographer) They wanted a butterfly mask that would be waterproof with dozens of butterflies sticking out from it – a fun challenge! I started with a hard resin Venetian base (not a paper mache one as that would have just disintegrated), attached layers of feathered butterflies to it then added some felt fabric which has a good bond onto the base. I also sandwiched the ribbons under this felt to make sure they were super secure. Lastly, the mask was coated in a thin solution of pva glue to make it fully waterproof. Here is the original mask (which was requested in all white):-
