Halloween – my favourite holiday of the year. It beats my Birthday and blows Christmas out of the water. Why do I love it so much? Because of the fun, the costumes, the masquerade parties and the imaginative decorations. With Halloween, anything goes.
My first taste of Halloween was as a child where I remember making my own costumes (Count Dracula cape from a black bin liner and a cardboard collar!) to go trick or treating in, and donning paper masks that I could hide behind so nobody knew me.
My next experience was to be many years later whilst on a trip to the USA. The Halloween festivities were just phenomenal. I mean, the decorations on the local houses, the amazing costume parties and the food… left me with a need to carry on the tradition here. So for the past few years, I have gone to town with decorating my house, having themed Halloween costume parties and have also experienced my very first Halloween Masquerade Ball in Whitby, where I got to dress up as Marie Antoinette, wearing my own specially designed Masquerade Mask.

Some of you may have been watching the recent Channel 4 documentary called ‘Sex Party Secrets’ which “enters the hidden world of the UK’s self-proclaimed ‘sexual elite’, meeting the meticulously vetted guests fulfilling their fantasies at exclusive sex parties” For those that didn’t turn off the T.V in shock, you will have seen the guests wearing an array of masks to hide their identity on camera – reminiscent of the infamous “Eyes Wide Shut” film from 1999 featuring Tom Cruise. Yet the masks are starting to move away from the traditional Venetian styles, and we are seeing more contemporary versions made of leather and lace, allowing the wearer to express their own personality through their mask – since their face is usually hidden. A few months ago, the very lovely Helen (from Machin Mayer Photography) asked me to be involved in one of her Bridal Shoots she was planning. It was a black & white theme called ‘Magpie Bride’ and I was to supply a variety of masks for the shoot, mainly in the monochrome colour scheme.
The final images she sent me were stunning and a break from the classic Venetian Bride look.
